Environmental monitoring of petroleum activities on the Norwegian continental shelf

Retningslinjer for miljøovervåking av petroleumsvirksomheten til havs

Companies operating on the Norwegian continental shelf are required to carry out environmental monitoring in order to obtain information on the actual and potential environmental impacts of their activities and to give authorities a better basis for regulation.

These guidelines are a result of the cooperation between the Norwegian Environment Agency, an expert advisory group appointed by the Agency, oil and gas companies and consultancy firms. The guidelines serve as a template for how the more general regulatory requirements can be fulfilled. They cover the expected scope of monitoring activities, which parameters should be analyzed and which methods should be used, necessary accreditation and template for reporting.

Revised October 2023.
