Mapping conifer trees by means of remote sensing

To increase timber production, many non-native species have been planted in Norway during the last 100 years, especially along the coast in western and northern Norway. Introduced species may have negative effects on biodiversity and today forest owners must request permission to plant introduced species.

The management of the regulations are based on information on current non-native conifer species. To provide information on location and burdening of non-native conifer species over large areas remote sensing offers a large potential both using the recent satellite missions of the Copernicus program and using data from aerial photo and laser scanning campaigns in Norway.
