Survey of unregulated chemicals in novel plastic-based toy materials

This report presents the results of the investigation of chemicals from 20 toy products made up from novel materials, such as biobased or recycled plastic material.

The selected toys are intended for use by children under 36 months.

A range of substances were extracted from the materials and identified by mass spectrometry.

The presumed function of the identified substances varies and may stem from either the biopolymer or conventional plastic that has been used for recycling.

None of the identified substances were found after migration to artificial saliva.
