The Norwegian Environment Agency has awarded Sintef in partnership with Vista Analyse a contract for a report giving an overview of the possibilities for Direct Air Capture of CO2 (DAC).
There are several technologies at different stages of development. The main finding is that the technologies need further testing and scale-up before good economic estimates can be given.
Abatement cost has been estimated for two hypothetical plants in Norway ranging from 216-389 USD/tCO2 (not included: area, infrastructure, transport or storage of the captured CO2, other damages to nature, wildlife, etc.). Pessimistic/optimistic assumptions can change the costs ± 50%.
A more detailed Executive summary is given in the beginning of the report.
